Entry 15: "Friendly" Advice


In reality, friendships are among the trickiest relationships out there. As difficult as it may be to find a romantic partner, it is arguably even more challenging to find a new friend that we can connect to and still keep in touch with our current friends. But that should not stop us from creating new friendships, especially when it is so important to have friends in our lives to keep our social lives healthy and happy!

What do the numbers say about this?

Surveys have found that people in the 1980s have better social lives than us now, even though now we are socializing more than ever. However, the clear difference in our social lives of now and back then is that we now depend too much on the social media to socialize. It is undeniable that virtual friendships aren't as satisfying as direct friendships are. Because of the comfort zone that has been created by the virtual world, most people in their 20s and 30s now admit that they don't know how to make new friends and feel abandoned by their old ones.

Other researches suggest that a network of close friends can reduce stress, as well as promote good health and longevity. While it’s perfectly reasonable to desire some alone time, nothing can replace the value of a close friendship.

Unfortunately, making friends just aren't easy at all. But I'm not saying that it can't be done. For anyone finding it difficult in making new friends and maintaining old friends, here are some tips to guide you in doing so.

Making New Friends


1. Be blind.
Most of us must have heard about blind dates before. If you've just moved into a city, have a friend to set you up with a complete stranger that lives in the same area. Once you're close with him.her, you'll be thankful to your friend for the quick friendship boost in a new environment.

2. Be yourself.
When you pursue your hobbies and activities you enjoy, you will be exposed to meeting people with the same interests in mind. Take that opportunity to build that relationship closer with a person which has same interests with you. So go and get involved in clubs and camps because each event is another chance to make a whole bunch of new like-minded buddies.

3. Be personal.
When you're starting to get to know someone, try to talk about something deeper than just the weather. Once the two of you have disclosed something meaningful, your friendships are surprisingly closer than ever.

4. Be confident.
Set a goal: this may sound too technical, but somehow it works just fine. Try it out the next time you join a party, tell yourself this: "When this party is over, I will walk away with at least 3 new friends." You may not reach the target every time, but you will make new friends from every event you go to and eventually adds up to your list of friends.

5. Be friendly.
Smile! Don't you look this down, but smiling is one of the most important tip you can ever get anywhere. The way you look affects massively on how people communicate with you. Learn to put on a natural smile the next time you talk and you will see the magic.

Keeping The Olds

They were the ones that laughs at you before helping out, that danced in public with you without shame, and heard your cries when your parents punished you. But it all changed when we become "professional". It's easier to create new social circles than maintain the old ones. The tips below will help you in maintaining old friends by being honest, forgiving, and supportive.

1. Understand it.
So John have forgotten your birthday and Mary never made it to your birthday party. As hurtful as their lack of interest might be, try being loose to them. Instead of taking it as if they have turned effortless or uncaring, consider that they might be flooded with family, work, or study responsibilities, and remember that you've probably also been like that too.

2. Virtualize it.
Even though the social media cannot replace real friendships, but it is a great way to strengthen them. Posting a status in your own wall may not have any effect, but posting on your old friend's wall to congratulate them on their recent achievements do make huge differences in tightening your friendship bonds.

3. Schedule it.
By the time we come back from class or work, we may not have any time in our hands to socialize. Set a time and date in the calendar to chat, call, or even Skype with friends who live far away! You'll be glad for not skipping the date.

4. Recall it.
So maybe you have a friend that you spend most of the time in the past bowling with, and have not met for a long time. Rather than meeting up for an awkward cup of coffee, you could meet him/her at the bowling alley to refresh and recall your past memories with what both of you enjoy.

5. Attend it.
Once in a while, plan an experience with your group of old besties! When a friend moves far away, consider saving up some cash to pay a visit and hang out in their new place. Though, you can also give a hint to your fellow friends that your door is always open for visitations too.

The Takeaway

Sometimes it just happens. People grow away from their old friends and gets along with new ones. We can’t help feeling like we’re the only person at the party without a friend. Whatever the circumstance, it’s important not to get discouraged. With enough self-confidence, flexibility, and patience, it’s possible to find friends in almost any situation, and keep them for life.

Entry 14: Last but not Least

14 weeks for this blog has passed. I somehow feel attached to my weekly posts, as if they are the sugar for Teh-o-ais. What is Teh-o-ais without sugar?!

Anyways, not wasting my last post of the semester, I'm gonna end it like how I started it; with a short poem.

Every ending,
Is a new beginning,
What is wrong,
With the world we're living?

When we have,
We reserve,
When we lack,
We love.

Give a man a bar of gold,
He invests even more gold,
Let him not know what is gold,
He invests love til' old.

But who am I to judge,
A worthless sinful man,
But all that God has done,
Has made me able to stand.

As far as I may know,
Nothing in this world I own,
For not myself I even own,
For I am God's alone.

This poem isn't really as good as the previous ones, but here you go ><

Entry 13: Does it matter?

Does it matter?
The things that we do?
What really matters?
Materials or you?

The sweat and blood,
Of scars and scorns.
Is it for love,
Or for those horns?

Can we see them?
Can we not?
The reason and purpose,
That most forgot.

Remember your route,
Don't ever stray.
For when you do,
Hurt others, you may.

From papers to metals,
And leathers to gold.
Are all these your cravings,
And treasure til' old?

Take the log out,
From the eyes of the wicked,
And nurture your wisdom,
With the mind you've been blessed,

Entry 12: Bottle Heart

A heart is just like a bottle.
The owner decides what to fill it with.
Fill it with precious water, the bottle becomes valuable,
Whereas if the bottle is filled with trash, it belongs to the dumpster.

The things you hold dearest in your heart determines what you see in yourself,
Or even what others see.
Whenever you're depressed, ask yourself; Why?
When it's hard for you to make a decision, what do you fill your bottle heart with?
Does it satisfy your main purpose of life?
Is what you fill into the bottle is too much?
Can your bottle handle the weight, volume, chemicals?
If the substance filled in the bottle is not suitable, the bottle will be destroyed.
Just like how your heart will melt, scatter, dissolve, or vanish.

Only fill your bottle with what is suitable.
Only do what you are capable to do.
Because at the end of the day, you handle the scar of your own heart and no one else could help you with that.

Choose wisely and don't regret after your decision.

Entry 11: Words With Thorns

I may seem friendly,
I may seem not,
I may look happy,
But deep down, I'm not.

But to you, I might,
To others, might not,
Because to them,
I make hearts rot.

"I do not care,
I will not care."
I say I don't,
But actually, I care.

My life, my dreams,
My hope, my future,
Myself, my feelings,
My, my, all mine.

My selfishness, why can't you see?
From my head, down to my feet,
My eyes filled with my own,
My mouth maketh my throne.

All I've said, starting from top,
Maybe I am, maybe I'm not,

My man cave, I am in,

Entry 8: Not Having That One Thing


As I was thinking of what to write for my blog,
I was rubbing my eye unconsciously.
And I became conscious when its already too late!

My left eye became all swollen and watery...
It is as if I'm winking all the time wherever I go! Hahaha

Pity me right? xD
No.
I started to compare myself with people who at their worse experiences..
People who really lost their body parts..
So, WHO AM I TO BE PITY-ED FOR?!

THINK about them, PITY THEM!
People who didnt even have the CHANCE to experience
what certain parts of the body can do!
The world is unfair, and it will never be.

So next time whenever you compare,
compare positive things with greater things so you'll never be too proud,
and compare negative things with worse things so you'll never lose humbleness.

Entry 7: Choose Two!

If you say this isn't right then you must NOT be a UTAR student.

Definitely I've chosen the Social life and pursuing to get into the "Good Grades" section, even though I'm not getting enough sleep.

It's been killing me, I love to sleep, but I have to force myself to NOT sleep. 
OH GOD WHY!

I think it would be better to replace the "Good Grades" section for "Knowledge", so it'll make more sense; because grades are determined by other parties, but we have full control of the knowledge we gain and it only depends on ourselves.

Because grades are what people determine who you are nowadays. That's not really my concern. Go for Knowledge instead, where it is not about how people judge you, but how you judge everything else with your extra knowledge, isn't that better?

Though, may I present to you another triangle! Voila!
Call me weird, but sometimes I thank God for having an average (or lower if you may) look. Because when you look good, people treat you differently, better. Then, it will be extremely difficult for you to know the true hearts of the people around you.

I don't mind not having the looks, one cheeky reason is because I want my future wife to love me not of my looks but who I am next time. Don't laugh at me hahahaha xD

Entry 5: Pride


Just an afternoon while waiting for my friends to join me for lunch,
"I dont blame some of the UTAR students who suicide because of stress."
Before that very afternoon, I was up all night completing one of my assignments.
My brain feels as if it's shutting down any minute.

But it all brings to an equation:
Time x Effort = Outcome
Is the time and effort really worth for what I'm getting?
What did I get out of it? 3.2 isn't really a "WOW" thing. So I didn't see the point.

Then it came to me.
That UTAR is successful for a reason.
That the students were of top class. 
Not because of the grades.
Not because of the affordable (CHEAP) price.
But the Soft Skills they produce in the students.

I mean, we are TRAINED, and FORCED to do everything out of nothing!

We are like.. Magicians! erm.. not really..
I just need sleep, that's all xD
No poem this week!
But there will be one next week, I promise! :3

Entry 4: Preferences


This week I've been thinking a lot.

One of it was;
"How sad would it be for a person that is not able to do what he/she likes to do?"
To always just do normal, or boring stuff. Could be torturing!

But it came to me again, asking;
"How much sadder would it be.. if a person needs to do things that he/she dislikes?"

I mean.. at least the first person has a choice to do more things that he might like in the future.
Whereas, the second is pure everlasting torture. 
Choice-less. 
Freedom-less.

Change topic.

Here's one for my good friend:

Entry 3: Think About Such Things

Philippians 4:8
"Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, 
whatever is noble, whatever is right, 
whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, 
whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent and praiseworthy
 - think about such things."

It all started when I downloaded an app called "Daily Bible Versus" on my phone.
From that day onward, I check frequently for
the verse that is kept in-store for me every day.
As you should've guessed now, I'm a Christian, proud to be, forever will be.
And there is this saying 
that whenever a Christian "stops struggling, he/she isn't living a spiritual life".

In other words,  from 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 says:
"But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong."

I re-quote: "For when I am weak, then I am strong."
Therefore I say, as a Christian, we are not to be holy, but we are to be as holy as possible.

Going back to where we started, the verse on top struck me hard on my nerves,
because whatever that is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy,
THINK about such things.

Entry 1: Rotten Poetry

Well, it has been quite a long time since I've written a blog.
Especially, this is a very new experience for me because my old blog was actually a private blog.
The blogs I've written before were kind of weird and not really exposing my whole self, even if it was to the anonymous people.
The way I did this is through writing poems, where I am comfortable to show how I really feel.
It's been long I didn't do this, so, yeah.

Burdened, my heart,

Desperate or not,
